Breathtaking? Yes. Did we also lose our breath making it? Also yes.

We had a simple target, get our existing users to celebrate their language learning wins, notice their setbacks to improve on for the next year and garner interest from newer language learning enthusiasts by showcasing their wins. How do we do this? Our prime competitor, Duolingo, had introduced an interactive Year End Recap in 2019 that did just that and we were all about creating our own spin of this incredible feature. Based on our research, we had built this based on what languages they learned, how much time was spent learning the language, the longest streak they maintained, number of new words learnt, most experience gained in a day, the fastest a lesson was complete and the highest league award they had won.

It was simple, it wasn't easy.

While Duolingo's Recap was a fun experience, it certainly lacked an oomph. I'm a big fan of simplistic and clean design, but when Spotify blows the competition out of the water with their interactive experience with Wrapped, I was sure we could come up with something that was good enough.
